Bead and Keep Healthy!

Here are some tips to help your body while you bead.

  1. Take frequent eye breaks. About every 15 minutes, look up from your project and focus elsewhere in your room. Blinking helps too.
  2. Make certain that the lighting is appropriate for your task.
  3. Keep hydrated by drinking water.
  4. Try to remember to stretch every hour.  Moving your head, neck and shoulders is particularly important.  When we are beading we often have our head down which can cause strain to our neck, upper shoulders and lower back. Strain can also build up in our thumbs, hands and wrists. Check online for stretching exercises to find directions from experts to meet your needs.
  5. Arrange your work space so that the tools and supplies you use frequently are conveniently placed close to your work area and that you don’t have to make awkward reaches.  
  6. Make certain that your chair height is appropriate for the height of the work surface. Ideally your chair should be adjustable so that the seat height and angle can be varied. Also a swivel seat is helpful. Your knees should be slightly above your hips when seated. Try using a foot rest if necessary. This helps to reduce pressure on your lower spine. Read about ergonometric chairs online to help you decide whether there are changes you need to make for a less stressful working position for your body.
